On Sunday, October 10, it was
reported that the popular Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM1,
was summoned by the Ogun state police for questioning over the shooting of an
undergraduate at the University town, Ago-Iwoye.
The victim, who was identified as Kofowora Azeez, was a student
of the department of Business Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University,
Ago-Iwoye. He was hit by a bullet allegedly fired by the musician’s bodyguard
during a party at about 1am.
In a press statement
released by KWAM1’s publicist, Olasoju Adebayo, the legendary Fuji artist
denied any involvement in the shooting of the student. He also stated his
version of the events.
According to E247 Magazine,
the statement said: “My
attention has been drawn to a story about a student purportedly shot at
Ago-Iwoye where my band was engaged to perform early Sunday morning. I wish to
state that no such incident happened throughout the few hours we stayed in the
community; at least to the best of my knowledge.”
He said that after the show
he took some time to take pictures with some of the students and headed to his
residence in Ijebu-Ode where he stayed for seven hours before returning to
Lagos to catch a flight to London.
KWAM1 said he was shocked
when he began to receive calls from people who informed him that he was wanted
by the police in connection with the shooting of a student of Ago-Iwoye.
The music star insisted
that neither him nor his band was involved in any fracas and implored the
authorities to begin a proper investigation to get to the truth.
KWAM1 noted that there was
a good security presence, comprising of both police and soldiers, at the venue
which obviously reinforced the fact that there could have been no violence at
the event.
