Oscar Pistorius is to be released from prison after serving less than one year for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The Paralympian and Olympian will be put under house arrest, the South Africa parole board has said.
He was due to be released in August because of good behaviour but the South African justice minister overruled it, saying the decision, made in June, was “premature”.
The double amputee will have served 12 months of a five-year prison sentence forculpable homicide for shooting his model and lawyer girlfriend Steenkamp on Valentines’ Day last year through his closed bathroom door.
It is generally assumed that he will be swapping his prison cell on Tuesday for his Uncle Arnold’s three-storey mansion in the ‘old money’ area of Waterkloof, Pretoria.
The prosecution has appealed against his culpable homicide verdict, insisting he should be convicted of murder which carries a minimum jail term of 15-years.
Any offender jailed for five years or less in South Africa is legally allowed to move to correctional supervision having served one-sixth of their sentence.
Justice Minister Michael Masutha said in August he received a petition from the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa, opposing Pistorius’ release on parole, saying it flouted the rules.
The 28-year-old made history at the London 2012 Olympics when he became the first Paralympian to run in the Olympics.
