Lassa Fever Hits Ekiti And Delta States

Barely 48 hours after the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Kola Oluwawole described Ekiti as example to other states in the management of Lassa fever, a case of the dreaded disease has been reported in Ido Ekiti, headquarters of Ido/Osi local government area of the state.

According to Dailypost,The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olurotimi Ojo, who confirmed the case officially on Monday at a stakeholders’ meeting on Lassa fever in Ado Ekiti, said the patient has been isolated as doctors are battling to ensure her survival.
According to Informationng,The Delta State Ministry of Health, Monday, announced that it had confirmed the first case of Lassa fever in the state.
According to a statement signed by Mr. Churchill Oyewo, Public Relations Officer of the ministry, the index case occurred after a 65-year-old woman from neigbouring Anambra was admitted at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Asaba.
 
The woman was said to have been referred to Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, when her condition worsened. But her case was later confirmed as Lassa fever at the Virology Laboratory, Specialist Hospital, Irrua, Edo.
The ministry said that following the discovery, the state Rapid Response Team immediately placed 22 persons who had contact with the woman on surveillance.
 
Five other samples had been sent for laboratory investigation, the ministry said, adding that it had informed the Federal Ministry of Health on the development.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has also provided the necessary logistics to enhance contact tracing and control measures, the statement read.
