Jay Z’s mother Gloria Carter is following in her successful son’s footsteps. Like Jay Z, owner of the 40/40 Sports Club chain, she is getting into the restaurant business.
Carter is now one of three owners of “Diamondz N Da Ruff,” a new soul food eatery in Newark, New Jersey. It opened just three weeks ago under as a partnership between Gloria Carter and her longtime friends Peggie Miller and Debra Holmes, reports The New York Post.

Jay Z and his wife, Beyoncé, attended the opening night party, reports EURWeb. Since then, business has been booming. And for the first two Sundays, customers lined up around the corner.
According to the Post, “Diamondz has none of the markings of the owner’s famous offspring. It’s a quaint room with exposed brick walls, a tile floor and busy red and purple fabric on the windows.

The restaurant even features karaoke nights on Fridays and open-mike nights on Saturdays. Diamondz plays music more attuned to light jazz as opposed to hip hop, so don’t expect to hear any of Jay Z’s hits blasting while you dine here. And according to the Post, the atmosphere is decidedly low-key and more Cheers neighborhood spot like.

“Unlike the 40/40 Club or the exclusive Vault club at the Barclays Center, there’s no VIP room or velvet rope. The one-room boîte is a social free-for-all, with strangers chatting up strangers, making it feel like a family reunion. The owners and waitresses dish out just as many hugs as plates of $15 crab cakes (their best seller),writes the Post.
