While it has been no secret that Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have been living apart, the America's Got Talent host confirmed the two are officially separated during an appearance on Good Morning America Monday.
"You and I were just talking, Mariah and you are separated, [but] Christmas is about family first and foremost," host Lara Spencer said to Cannon, who was there to promote his new Christmas book, Roc and Roe's Twelve Days of Christmas, which is about his and Carey's two kids.
Despite the split, the DJ replied, "Always focus on family. We'll forever be family. At the same time, we're there for our children, making them the No. 1 priority and understanding they're loved and can have an amazing holiday."
Mariah, 44, and Nick, 34, secretly wed in April 2008 after a six-week courtship. They are parents to 3-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe.
Reports surfaced this past summer that their relationship was on the rocks. Though Cannon went on to confirm this in various interviews over the past several months, Carey, for the most part, has stayed mum. A divorce is said to be "imminent," but no papers have been filed.
Last week, People reported that Mariah was three hours late for Tuesday's Rockefeller Center Christmas tree taping because she was dealing with her attorneys.
"She was on the phone for probably close to five hours straight with lawyers," a source told the magazine.
"She would never want to upset her fans," the insider explained, adding that the call was crucial because she and Cannon are "arguing over property and custody of the twins."
The source continued, "She's
trying to keep it together. I think they're trying to work all these
details out on property and the kids before it gets filed… They
communicate because of the kids."
Cannon even spent Thanksgiving with Mariah and their children and apparently have plans to do the same over Christmas.
